CENTERBOARD YACHT CLUB

JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM

Centerboard Yacht Club is hosting SailMaine classes at their club on the waterfront in South Portland.  CYC’s sheltered inner harbor sailing site is ideal for students  just starting out and those coming from the south side of the Casco Bay bridge.  Open to students 8-12 years old, the CYC Junior Sailing Program provides a supportive environment where students can learn to sail, while learning respect for their fellow sailors, boats, and the water from specifically qualified SailMaine instructors.   Students will have fun on the water while learning the language of sailing, rigging, boat handling and steering in JY Trainers and Optimist dinghies. SailMaine Junior Sailing at Centerboard Yacht Club classes are offered in week long increments over the course of eight weeks, with morning, afternoon or full day classes available. Weeks do not have to be taken sequentially – a great option for busy summer schedules that need flexibility!

Your child will gain hands-on sailing experience and knowledge, friends, and great memories that will last a lifetime.

Who should take this course? Beginner and intermediate sailors, ages 8-12 and under 125 lbs. Ability to swim required – students will be given a swim test on the first day of class. Morning courses may be somewhat more beginner level due to often lighter morning winds during the summer months although sailors may opt to take both morning and afternoon classes.

What will my child learn? Students will learn boat rigging, basic sailing, and water safety. Our instructor leads brief classroom discussions on the skills that will be covered during the rest of the day’s activities before heading out on the water.

What is the Cost:  $TBA per student per one week, half day class. $TBA per student per one week full day class.

Do not let financial limitations prevent your child from sailing! We can help make it possible. SailMaine believes that everyone should have the chance to learn how to sail.  Contact Jordan Parks at jordan.parks@sailmaine.org for more information.

When are the courses offered?

Morning Class: 9:00 am – 12:00 noon
Afternoon Class: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Signing up for multiple sessions is a great way to get your sailor to more advanced levels of sailing.

What do we need to bring? Students must bring a water bottle, sunscreen, water shoes and towel; a healthy snack and change of clothes is recommended.  SailMaine will provide life jackets, but students are encouraged to bring their own.

What is the Swim Test? All participants must demonstrate swimming ability and comfort level in the water. The goal of the swim test is to see how the participants respond to cold water, and gauge their ability to follow directions while swimming. We do the swim test right off the dock on the first day of each session. The instructors will ask each child to swim 25 yards and tread water for 2-3 minutes in a life jacket.

Cancellation Policy: A full refund will be granted if the request is made more than three (3) weeks prior to the program start date. A 50% refund will be granted if the request is made less than three (3) weeks prior to the program start date but more than one (1) week before the program start date. No refund will be granted if the request is made less than one (1) week before the program start date.
